PE Philosophy

The aim of the Physical Education Programme at Scissett Middle is to provide opportunities to participate in physical activities conducive to a healthy lifestyle, whilst developing the physical competence to enable them to enjoy a range of activities. Pupils will follow a varied curriculum throughout Years 6 - 8 in a wide variety activities, taught by a team of specialist PE teachers. Through Physical Education we will aim to build confidence and allow pupils to be creative and competitive.

The use of specialist coaches allows the department to introduce new activities and keep the curriculum varied and fresh whilst allowing the members of staff to continue to develop their expertise in an increasing range of activities.

Some of the Sports Premium funding has been used to purchase specialist equipment to develop the athletics curriculum, whilst the funding has also helped transport pupils to compete in Local and regional events including the West Yorkshire Youth Games at Leeds Beckett University.

‘The additional Primary School Sports funding is used to supplement the school's existing and extensive collaborative work to promote pupils' participation in sport. Pupils of all ages are very positive about these opportunities and the vast majority are involved in sport outside their normal lessons.’ - Ofsted 2013

Intra-school competition

Year 6 have had the opportunity to compete in a number of Intra School competitions and as of April 2015, 92% of the year group have competed at this level.

Inter-school competition

Year 6 have the opportunity to compete in inter-school Sportshall Athletics, Cross Country, Disability Athletics, Girls and Boys Football and Tag Rugby. As of April 2015, 19.4% of the year group have competed at this level.

Boys Hockey

This year, for the very first time, a Boys Hockey team from Scissett Middle School has entered a schools Hockey league, although with no such opportunity available within the Huddersfield Schools Sport Association we were invited to enter the Wakefield Schools league. On a very cold and wet night at Wakefield Hockey Club the first game could not have been more difficult, playing against last year’s league winners, Kettlethorpe High School. The boys produced a superb performance winning 1-0. It was a tight game with Xavier making a couple of outstanding stops in the final few minutes, but Arron’s second half goal ensured a deserved win.  Two of the players, Oliver and Arron have since been selected to play for West Yorkshire and there are a number of other boys who clearly have the talent to make that step over the next couple of years. A boys Hockey Club runs every Friday after school under the guidance of Kelly Fillingham who is Head of Junior Development at Lockwood Park Dragons and new players are always welcome.

Jack

Jack has played Squash since the age of nine, initially at Skelmanthorpe, but now trains 3 times per week at Academy Squash in Lockwood. He is also in the Yorkshire Development Squad.

Jack has recently been selected to play for West Yorkshire U13’s and will be playing against competitors from counties such as Durham and Lancashire.

The highlight of his season will be representing Yorkshire at the end of season Northern Cup in June.
